In shipbuilding and marine engineering, materials must have high strength, excellent seawater corrosion resistance, and good weldability. Among these, 5083 aluminum alloy is one of the most widely used marine-grade aluminum alloys.
5083 aluminum plate belongs to the Al-Mg series corrosion-resistant alloy, with magnesium as the main alloying element. It offers excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, making it suitable for critical structures such as ship hulls, decks, bulkheads, offshore platforms, and LNG storage tanks.
Compared with commonly used 6061 marine aluminum, 5083 marine aluminum plate does not require complex heat treatment to achieve high strength. Its strength can be controlled through cold working, and it offers superior weldability. Welds achieve high consistency with base metal strength and are less prone to cracking, perfectly accommodating the extensive welded structures in shipbuilding.
5083 aluminum plate is well-known for its combination of high strength, weldability, and corrosion resistance, making it popular in marine, transportation, and construction applications. MC Aluminum Co., Ltd. provides 5083 plates in O, H111, H112, H116, and H321 tempers.
We stock aluminum plates ranging from 0.250" to 2.00" in thickness, widths up to 120", and lengths up to 300". Custom sizes can be manufactured according to customer requirements. All materials comply with ASTM B209 and ASME SB209 standards.

Advantages of 5083 Marine Aluminum Plate
Lightweight:
Density is only ~2.66–2.7 g/cm³, about one-third of steel. This reduces vessel weight, increases speed, decreases fuel consumption, and lowers the center of gravity for improved stability.Excellent Weldability:
Supports MIG (metal inert gas) and TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding. Weld strength can reach over 90% of the base metal, with low susceptibility to intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone. 5183 filler wire is recommended for welding.Seawater Corrosion Resistance:
5083 aluminum maintains stable chemical properties in seawater environments and resists both chloride-induced and atmospheric marine corrosion. This makes it a preferred material in shipbuilding.Good Formability:
Whether bending thin plates or cutting and shaping thick plates, 5083 exhibits excellent machinability and adaptability to complex ship structures.Low-Temperature Performance:
5083 aluminum does not become brittle at low temperatures, making it suitable for LNG tanks and cryogenic vessels.

Typical Marine Applications
Ship Hulls:
H116 and H321 tempers are commonly used in underwater hull sections. Their high corrosion resistance ensures long-term durability in seawater, while the lightweight properties reduce overall vessel weight, increasing speed and fuel efficiency.Decks and Bulkheads:
H111 and H112 tempers are often used in decks and bulkheads, offering sufficient structural strength and good ductility to handle dynamic loads during marine operations.Engine Beds and Bridges:
H112 temper is selected for engine beds and bridges due to its high strength and workability, ensuring structural stability under heavy static and dynamic loads.Keel and Frames:
5083 aluminum is widely applied in keels and frames. H116 and H321 tempers meet the high strength and corrosion resistance required for these critical structural components, while the lightweight nature improves maneuverability.Marine Components and Accessories:
Beyond main structural parts, 5083 aluminum is used for various components such as rudder housings, lamp brackets, and decorative panels, taking advantage of its mechanical performance and surface finish.
